JuJuBe

Chapel Hill, NC

Jujube is an Asian inspired restaurant that blends the flavors of China and Vietnam.   The strong, vibrant character of these cuisines informed the design concept.   Located in a commercial shell space that once housed a take out deli, the restaurant has a very large back-of-house kitchen.  The front-of-house consists of three primary areas: kitchen dining, bar dining and conventional dining.

To allow the dining area to flow into the kitchen, a series of holes were cut into the existing masonry walls. Surrounding the existing cooking line, the dining room offers patrons the opportunity to watch the preparations and enjoy the activity around them.  The new environment reflects the simplicity and strength of the menu concept and the focused character of the design helped to maximize the limited construction budget.   The use of intense interior colors provides a striking contrast to the black & white photographs that adorn the walls. This combination creates a dining environment that is dynamic while also being a place of focus and comfort.
