Sir Walter Apartments

Raleigh, NC

The Sir Walter Hotel is the oldest surviving hotel building in Raleigh. Completed in 1924, the facility was the focal point for state political activity for decades. Typical of hotels of the 1920s, the facility is a 10-story, L-shaped building with a primary brick exterior, with classical stone ornamentation at the street and roof levels. The 174,000 sf building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is a designated Raleigh Historic Landmark. In 1978, the building was converted into the Sir Walter Apartments, housing one hundred forty apartments for seniors. The current project included a complete renovation of all existing residential units and public spaces and the construction of eighteen new units on the vacant Tenth Floor. Amenities include laundry, fitness and multi-use areas. Funding included Federal Historic Tax Credits, NCHFA LIHTC’s and Raleigh CDBG / HOME funds.
