Historic Wilkesboro School

Wilkesboro, NC

The Historic Wilkesboro School Project involved the re-purposing of a 2-story, circa 1937, National Register school building and the construction of a two-story addition to create a 41-unit congregate senior living facility. The design intent was to save, restore, and enhance the existing historic school building and to create a new addition that was complementary to the existing structure. All work was completed in accordance with National Park Service standards for historic preservation.  Sustainable building practices were incorporated throughout the project. These include metal roofs with reflective finishes to minimize solar gain, Energy Star-rated light fixtures and resource efficient appliances. The 1.5 acre site includes a community garden, exterior courtyard and public parking.
